About the Municipality

Discover Polillo, Quezon

Founded on June 30, 1857, Polillo is one of the largest and most vibrant municipalities in the Province of Quezon. Nestled between the mountains of the Bondoc Peninsula and the coastal waters of Lamon Bay, the municipality boasts diverse landscapes — from marshlands and waterfalls to pristine offshore islands.

Polillo has a rich history dating back to pre-colonial times as a sovereign state called Pulilu. The settlement was established as a town on March 18, 1587, though some records indicate it became an independent municipality in 1635. During the Spanish colonial period, the area experienced significant cultural and religious transformation with the establishment of St. Joseph Parish Church. During World War II, Polillo experienced Japanese occupation followed by liberation by local Commonwealth troops. Over time, several barrios separated to form neighboring municipalities including Burdeos, Panukulan, and Jomalig. In recent decades, the island has developed its tourism industry while maintaining its fishing and agricultural traditions.
